This emphasis builds a critical framework for understanding the social construction of race, structural and historical sources of racial inequality and oppression, and forms of resistance and movements for social change. Students will learn to: evaluate and explain how race and racism shape our society at the individual, institutional, and structural levels; explain how racial oppression intersects with other forms of oppression; apply sociological theories of race and racism to empirical examples; and identify mechanisms and opportunities for social change. Students will combine two core classes, SOC 038 Sociology of Race and Racism and SOC 180 Advanced Issues in Race and Ethnicity, with an elective focused on racial resistance and social change and an elective focused on racialized communities. Electives cut across many areas of sociology, including social movements, political sociology, Latina/o/x sociology, Indigenous sociology, and immigration. The Race and Racial Justice emphasis area is well-suited to students seeking a social grounding in understanding racial inequality and avenues for social change in the United States. This emphasis is ideal for students pursuing careers in DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion), education, law, criminal justice, and social work.
