Sociology, Community Studies Emphasis, B.A.


In addition to adhering to General Education  and School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts Requirements , the Sociology major requires at least 48 units in Sociology and related courses (some of which simultaneously meet general education requirements). Courses in the major emphasis must be taken for a letter grade, and specifically may not be taken on a pass/no pass basis unless the course is only offered on a pass/no pass basis.

Community Studies Emphasis Requirement [12 units]


This emphasis builds knowledge and capacity in community organizing and broad-based social movements. Students will gain knowledge of: building civic power, community-engaged research, labor and community coalitions, environmental justice, and policy change. Students will combine a required core class, SOC 009 Community Mobilization and Politics, with three additional electives. Electives are focused on different facets of grassroots power-building (labor advocacy, protest, social movements, local level environmental and climate justice, public policy, and political participation) and cover collective efforts to address threats posed by racism, climate change, educational inequality, and labor exploitation, among other social issues. The Community Studies emphasis area is well-suited to students with academic and career interests in public policy, civic engagement, immigrant rights, law, and equitable and safe labor conditions. Careers in these areas may be in community-based organizations, local and state agencies, labor, environmental justice, and public interest law.

Transfer Students


Transfer students who wish to major in Sociology should complete the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) at their community college. Transfer students may not be admitted to the Sociology major without specific major preparation. Below are the Transfer Admission Criteria for the Sociology Major.

To be admitted to the Sociology major transfer students must meet the following requirements:

  • SOC 016-SOC 089
