Environmental Humanities, B.A.

In addition to adhering to General Education  and School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts Requirements , the Environmental Humanities, B.A. major requires 50 units (some of which simultaneously fulfill general education requirements). Courses in the major must be taken for a letter grade and may not be taken on a pass/no pass basis unless the course is only offered on a pass/no pass basis. Students must complete all major course prerequisites with a C-or better.

Lower Division Major Requirements [20 Units]


Environmental Communications Requirement [4 units]


An introductory course in environmental communications introducing you to the basics of ecology and climate change, scientific methods, environmental racism and justice, and
principles of effective environmental communications. 

Complete the following course:

Literature Requirement [8 units]


These literature courses focus on environmental or social justice topics and introduce you to reading and analyzing environmental or social justice writing and creating your own pieces of environmental or social justice writing and media; they introduce you to the basic principles of environmental or social justice literature and your will begin to develop your own rhetorical and creative voice on environmental or social justice topics.

Complete two courses. One from the Environmental Literature area and the other from either Environmental or Social Justice Literature.

Environmental Science Requirement [8 units]


This requirement familiarizes you with the basics of various science and engineering issues related to the environment and the processes of scientific research. These courses explicitly address climate, ecology, biodiversity, environmental engineering and design, and/or scientific methods.

Complete two Environmental Science or Engineering courses from the following list.

Upper Division Major Requirements [30 Units]


Writing Requirement [4 units]


You will create professional and creative pieces of environmental writing, after studying the effectiveness of various environmental communications.

Complete the following course:

Literature Requirement [12 units]


Develop reading and writing skills as you analyze and respond to environmental literature and theatre. Research papers and projects develop skills of conducting and presenting research, and small group activities and projects in these small seminars develop community-creating and team-building skills.

Complete three courses. Two from the Environmental Literature area and the other from either Environmental or Social Justice Literature.

Policy and Society Requirement [4 units]


Take a course related to the social, political, and/or judicial aspects of environmental issues. These courses further develop social scientific methodologies. 

Complete one of the following courses:

Language and Ethics Requirement [4 units]


Explore the ethical and social aspects of language and communication, learning how language and other forms of communication affect audiences and disrupt or codify power structures. 

Complete one of the following courses:

Internship Requirement [2 units]


Apply your knowledge and hone your community-building skills through active participation in a campus environmental program or club, or an external internship. While enrolled in EH 192, students will participate in internship or one of the following campus options: RadioBio, Yosemite Leadership Program, Shakespeare in Yosemite, CALPIRG, LEED Laboratory, Sustainable Agriculture Society, Campus Garden, Student Sustainability Council, Earth Club, UC Sprouts, Sustainability Outreach Student Association, or other approved environmental club.

Complete the following course:

  • EH 192

Capstone Requirement [4 units]


Project-based group and independent academic research on a topic.

Transfer Students


Transfer students who wish to major in Environmental Humanities should complete the University of California Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) at their community college. Transfer students may not be admitted to the Environmental Humanities major without specific major preparation. Below are the Transfer Admission Criteria for the Environmental Humanities Major.

Transfer Selection Criteria


To be admitted to the Environmental Humanities major transfer students must meet the following requirements:

Applicants will, at the time of admission have completed at minimum the following courses (or their equivalent) with a “C‐” or better:

At least two UC‐Transferable courses from in any of the following topics: Environmental, Green, or Ecological Literature; Creative Writing; Professional Writing; Environmental Studies;
Sociology; Bioethics; Environmental Justice; Biology; Environmental Science; Environmental Engineering; Ecology; Public Health.
