Requirements for the Applied Mathematical Sciences Major

To receive the B.S. in Applied Mathematical Sciences students must adhere to General Education  and School of Natural Sciences Requirements . The Applied Mathematical Sciences program consists of 78-83 units with a minimum of 20 courses designed to give all students a common foundation of core knowledge specific to the discipline, plus breadth in an application area.

Requirements for Computer Science Emphasis Track [20 Units]

 Complete the following four courses:

• CSE 015: Discrete Mathematics Units: 4
• CSE 022: Introduction to Programming Units: 4
• CSE 024: Advanced Programming Units: 4
• CSE 031: Computer Organization and Assembly Language Units: 4

Elective Upper Division Math Courses

One of the following courses may be substituted for one course in any emphasis track, unless it is already part of the emphasis track or major requirements.

• MATH 101: Real Analysis Units: 4
• MATH 132: Numerical Methods for Differential Equations Units: 4
• MATH 140: Mathematical Methods for Optimization Units: 4
• MATH 146: Numerical Linear Algebra Units: 4
• MATH 170: Quantitative Modeling of Biological Systems Units: 4
• MATH 180: Applied Statistics and Machine Learning Units: 4

Transfer Students

To be admitted to the Applied Mathematical Sciences major transfer students must meet the following requirements:

Applicants will, at the time of admission have completed at minimum each of the following courses (or their equivalent) with a “C-” or better:

• MATH 021: Calculus I for Physical Sciences and Engineering Units: 4
• MATH 022: Calculus II for Physical Sciences and Engineering Units: 4
• PHYS 008: Introductory Physics I for Physical Sciences Units: 4
• PHYS 008L: Introductory Physics I for Physical Sciences Lab Units: 1
• PHYS 009: Introductory Physics II for Physical Sciences Units: 4
• PHYS 009L: Introductory Physics II for Physical Sciences Lab Units: 1

  Applicants must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.8 in transferable courses. Any outstanding General Education and Major preparation coursework will be completed at UC Merced.
