HIST 164: Urban East Asia Units: 4
Examine the histories, philosophies, geographies, and material conditions that shape urban areas in Asia with attention to the three historical capitals of Kyōto, Seoul, and Beijing. Far from simply adopting Western models for industrialization and nation-building, urban processes in East Asia also involve re-combinations of earlier elements. What can urbanization in Asia tell us about our collective futures? How do different peoples in Asia make their own form of urbanisms?
