Requirements for the Writing Studies Major
Lower Division Major Requirements [15 Units]
The following two courses are required. Foundation Requirement [8 units]
Upper Division Major Requirements [7 units]
Practicum [4 units]
Complete four units from the following options: Capstone [3 units]
Complete the following courses: Creative Writing Emphasis Requirements
The Creative Writing Emphasis Track is focused on introducing students to the field of creative writing. Students who take the Creative Writing Emphasis Track will develop their writing abilities and gain knowledge and foundational skills required in writing fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and other forms of creative writing. Those who take this Writing Studies track will gain a deeper understanding of current creative writing practices and theories, hone their creative writing processes and practice, and explore the editing and publication process. Upon completion of the Creative Writing Emphasis Track students will be able to pursue writing-related careers and/or be competitive for graduate-level writing programs. Theory and Methods [12 units]
Upper Division Writing [8 units]
Complete two of the following courses: Interdisciplinary Humanities [4 units]
Complete one of the following courses that are reading intensive, emphasizing a scope of humanities research and associated theories/methodologies to broaden and enrich students’ writing studies praxis: Creative Writing Specialization Requirement [20 units]
Intermediate Creative Writing [12 units]
Complete twelve units from the following courses: Advanced Creative Writing [4 units]
Complete the following course: Creative Writing Elective [4 units]
Complete four units from the following courses: Transfer Students
Transfer students who wish to major in Writing Studies should complete the University of California Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) at their community college. Transfer students may not be admitted to the Writing Studies major without specific major preparation. Below are the Transfer Admission Criteria for the Writing Studies Major. To be admitted to the Writing Studies major transfer students must meet the following requirements: Applicants will, at the time of admission have completed at minimum two of the following courses (or their equivalent) with a “C” or better: |
