Communication and Media Minor


The minor in Communication and Media at UC Merced brings together research and practices of the social sciences and humanities in a broadly interdisciplinary approach to the study of human communication in diverse media. This program offers students the tools available to analyze, investigate, and produce effective communication in a wide variety of media for diverse audiences and perspectives. The minor is designed to provide training in the field of communication that will enhance the value of a student’s major degree program. 

Minimum Requirements


To be awarded a minor in Communication and Media, students must successfully complete at least 24 units.

Lower Division Minor Requirements (12 Units)


Speech and Interpersonal Communication (8 units)


Complete two of the following courses:

Introductory Social Science and Humanities Communication (4 units)


Complete one of the following courses:

  • COMM 015: Intercultural Communication
  • COMM 017: Introduction to Media and Performance Studies or GASP 004  
  • COMM 060: Introduction to Linguistics

Upper Division Electives (12 Units)


Complete three of the following courses:

  • COMM 121: Persuasion
  • COMM 122: Media Campaigns
  • COMM 124: Intercultural Communication
  • COMM 125: International Rhetoric or WRI 121  
  • COMM 139: Topics in Health Communication
  • COMM 141: Management Communication or WRI 118  
  • COMM 152: Critical Photography or GASP 157  
  • COMM 171: Photography II or GASP 114A  
  • COMM 172: Video II or GASP 120  

Guidelines Applying to all SSHA Minors


Students should consult an advisor in the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts to officially declare the minor and plan their courses. The following guidelines must be adhered to:

  • To complete any SSHA minor, students must complete a minimum of five courses, at least four of which must be upper division.
  • All courses must be taken for a letter grade.
  • All minor course requirements must be completed with a C- or better.
  • A minimum overall grade point average of 2.0 (C) in upper division courses is required. The only exception is a Global Arts Studies Minor , for which the minimum GPA in upper division courses is 2.7 (B-).
  • At least three of the five required courses must be taken at UC Merced.
  • Only one course may be used simultaneously to satisfy requirements for two minors.
  • Only one course may be used to satisfy both a minor and a major requirement.
  • Students must consult the UC Merced General Catalog for prerequisites to required courses.
