Data Science and Computing, Custom Emphasis, B.S.

Requirements for the Data Science and Computing Major

To receive the B.S. in Data Science and Computing students must adhere to General Education  and School of Natural Sciences Requirements . The Data Science and Computing program is designed to give all students a common foundation of core knowledge specific to the discipline plus breadth in an application area.

Student-Designed Custom Emphasis [12-18 Units]

Students must complete between 12 and 18 units of approved course work toward the completion of a Custom Emphasis track. At least 8 of these units must be upper division courses one of which must have a significant computing or data analysis component. Students may design their own emphasis track with approval from the Data Sciences Executive Committee for the program.

Transfer Students

To be admitted to the Data Science and Computing major transfer students must meet the following requirements:

Applicants will, at the time of admission have completed at minimum each of the following courses (or their equivalent) with a “C-” or better:

• ( MATH 011: Calculus I  and  MATH 012: Calculus II ) or ( MATH 021: Calculus I for Physical Sciences and Engineering  and  MATH 022: Calculus II for Physical Sciences and Engineering  
• MATH 041: Matrix Analysis and Linear Algebra for Data Science  or  MATH 024: Linear Algebra and Differential Equations   

Additional Information

Applicants must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.8 in transferable courses. Any outstanding General Education and Major preparation coursework will be completed at UC Merced.
