Performance Studies Emphasis
The field of Performance Studies examines the relationships between performance in music, dance, theater, and other arts with human cultures and experiences. Our students take part in performance research, combining creative practices and rigorous scholarship, to explore a range of cultural expressions, including rituals, festivals, religious ceremonies, games, parades, storytelling, dress, martial arts, and the mass media. As an interdisciplinary field, Performance Studies integrates artistic practice in music, dance, and theatre with the analytical, interpretive, and creative skills that prepare individuals for diverse careers in and beyond the arts. We analyze performance from several major perspectives, including performance as an object of analysis, as a lens for social/cultural phenomena, and as a research method. As a public institution, we make diversity and inclusion a key part of our teaching, art making, and public programming.
