Requirements for the Chemical Sciences Major
To receive the B.S. in Chemical Sciences students must adhere to all General Education and School of Natural Sciences Requirements . The Chemical Sciences program consists of 80-92 units with a minimum of 26 courses designed to give all students a common foundation of core knowledge specific to the discipline, plus breadth in an application area.
There are honors versions of the three lower division Chemical Sciences courses, CHEM 002H , CHEM 008H , and CHEM 010H , which are open to students achieving high grades in the prerequisite courses (see course descriptions for details). These classes cover the same breadth of material as the non-honors versions, but are taught with smaller class sizes and cover the material in more depth.
Lower Division Major Requirements [46-48 Units]
Biological Sciences Requirement [4 units]
Complete the following course. BIO 001L is recommended, but not required.
General Chemistry Requirement [8 units]
Complete the following two general chemistry courses:
Organic Chemistry Requirement [4 units]
Complete the following two organic chemistry courses:
Computer Science Requirement [2-4 units]
Complete one of the following computer science courses:
Mathematics Requirement [20 units]
Complete the following five mathematics courses:
Physics Requirement [8 units]
Complete the following two physics courses:
Upper Division Major Requirements [28 Units]
Requirements for Materials Chemistry Emphasis [10-12 Units]
Materials Chemistry Elective
Complete one of the following materials electives:

Transfer Students
To be admitted to the Chemical Sciences major transfer students must meet the following requirements:
Applicants will, at the time of admission have completed at minimum each of the following courses (or their equivalent) with a “C-” or better: Additional Information
Applicants must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.8 in transferable courses. Any outstanding General Education and Major preparation coursework will be completed at UC Merced.
