Requirements for the Chemical Sciences Major

To receive the B.S. in Chemical Sciences students must adhere to all General Education  and School of Natural Sciences Requirements . The Chemical Sciences program consists of 80-92 units with a minimum of 26 courses designed to give all students a common foundation of core knowledge specific to the discipline, plus breadth in an application area.

There are honors versions of the three lower division Chemical Sciences courses, CHEM 002H , CHEM 008H , and CHEM 010H , which are open to students achieving high grades in the prerequisite courses (see course descriptions for details).  These classes cover the same breadth of material as the non-honors versions, but are taught with smaller class sizes and cover the material in more depth.

Requirements for Chemistry Emphasis Track [6-8 Units]

Any two of the following in-depth course electives:

• ESS 100: Environmental Chemistry in Natural Sciences Units: 4
• ESS 170: Fundamentals of Soil Science Units: 3 and ESS 170L  
• MSE 110: Solid State Materials Properties Units: 4
• MSE 118: Introduction to Nanotechnology and Nanoscience Units: 3
• Any other 3- or 4-unit CHEM course numbered 100-189 [3 or 4 units]
• Any 200-level CHEM course (instructor approval required) [3 units]

Transfer Students

To be admitted to the Chemical Sciences major transfer students must meet the following requirements:

Applicants will, at the time of admission have completed at minimum each of the following courses (or their equivalent) with a “C-” or better:

• CHEM 002: General Chemistry I Units: 4
• CHEM 010: General Chemistry II Units: 4
• MATH 021: Calculus I for Physical Sciences and Engineering Units: 4
• MATH 022: Calculus II for Physical Sciences and Engineering Units: 4
• PHYS 008: Introductory Physics I for Physical Sciences Units: 4
• PHYS 009: Introductory Physics II for Physical Sciences Units: 4
