PHIL 006: Introduction to Science, Technology, and Ethics Units: 4
Introduces students to the history, philosophy, and social studies of science and technology. Examines scientific research and technological development in its social, political, and economic context. Topics may include scientific paradigms and revolutions; the problem of induction; the idea of “the scientific method”; scientism and the role of expertise in democracy; gender and race in science and technology; scientific polarization and public scientific controversies; and the social and economic impacts of automation. Case studies will come from across fields of social and natural science, along with engineering.
