Requirements for the Data Science and Computing Major
To receive the B.S. in Data Science and Computing students must adhere to General Education and School of Natural Sciences Requirements . The Data Science and Computing program consists of 64-71 units, with a minimum of 10 courses designed to give all students a common foundation of core knowledge specific to the discipline plus breadth in an application area.
Lower Division Core Courses [24 Units]
Mathematics and Statistics [16 units]
Calculus Requirement [8 units]
Complete one of the following calculus sequences:
Calculus for Physical Sciences and Engineering
And the following courses [8 units]
Data Science [4 units]
Complete the following course:
Computing and Programming [4 units]
Complete the following course:
Upper Division Core Courses [16 Units]
Computing and Programming [4 units]
Complete the following course:
- DSC 111: Intermediate Computing & Statistical Programming
Data Science [8 units]
Complete the following courses:
- DSC 100: Advanced Data Science
- DSC 104: Ethics in Data Science
Machine Learning [4 units]
Complete one of the following courses
Upper Division Computational and Statistical Electives [10-12 Units]
Select three courses from the list below. These courses are taken in addition to your selected emphasis.

Complete one of the following courses. Note that registration in BIO 11 and BIO 12 also requires registration in a corresponding Lab and Discussion:

To be admitted to the Applied Mathematical Sciences major transfer students must meet the following requirements:
Applicants will, at the time of admission have completed at minimum each of the following courses (or their equivalent) with a “C-” or better:
Additional Information
Applicants must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.8 in transferable courses. Any outstanding General Education and Major preparation coursework will be completed at UC Merced.
